Cadillac Introduces 4.2L Twin Turbo V8 With 550 HP and 627 LB-FT

Cadillac has detailed its new 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which will debut in the new Cadillac CT6 V-Sport.

The DOHC 4.2-liter V8 engine is a completely new, clean-sheet design from General Motors and Cadillac. It features a so-called ‘hot vee’ design, which places the turbochargers at the top of the engine between the cylinder heads. The shortened distance between the turbos and the engine helps to reduces turbo lag and also contributes to the 4.2-liter engine’s compact design. The engine has a compression ratio of 9.8:1 and is capable of producing up to 20 psi of boost.

General Motors says the 4.2-liter engine will debut in the new Cadillac CT6 V-Sport, where it will make an impressive 550 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. The automaker also claims 90 percent of the torque will be available from as low as 2,000 RPM.

A less powerful CT6 with the same V8 is slated to arrive in early 2019 with about 500 hp at its disposal. Both vehicles will feature GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission, which will have extra short steps between the gears to keep the V8 in the optimal power band at all times.

Contributing to the engine’s fuel efficiency is an active fuel management system with cylinder deactivation and a standard start-stop system, but GM has yet to provide fuel economy estimates for the CT6 V-Sport.
