Patent drawings for the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe and 8 Series Cabriolet have surfaced online, revealing the designs of both vehicles well ahead of their respective debuts.

It was already known that BMW had both 8 Series Gran Coupe and 8 Series Cabriolet model variants in the works, but thanks to these patent drawings, which were dug up by Motor1, we don’t have to wait to get an idea of what they will look like.

The Gran Coupe looks essentially the same as the regular 8 Series Coupe from the front, but appears to take on a fastback-style shape in the rear similar to the Porsche Panamera. Between this patent drawing and the BMW M8 Gran Coupe Concept that was shown at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, we have a very good idea of what the new Panamera competitor will look like.

The 8 Series Cabriolet, meanwhile, holds no surprises and looks exactly like you would expect a soft-top version of the 8 Series Coupe would. The 8 Series Coupe was shown for the first time at the 24 Hours of Le Mans last weekend.

North American-spec 8 Series models will get a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine from launch, which will make 530 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque in the M850i xDrive model. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system.

It’s not clear when BMW may debut the 8 Series Gran Coupe and 8 Series Cabriolet, but it probably won’t be for a little while. After all, we’re still waiting to see the highly anticipated M8.
