Tesla is investing an additional $350 million to help meet demand for the upcoming Model 3.

Tesla will make the electric motors for the Model 3 at its Gigafactory in Nevada, Governor Brian Sandoval has revealed. The investment will outfit the Gigafactory with production lines to manufacture the electric motors and gearbox components, helping free up space at Tesla’s Freemont facility to help manufacture the Model 3. As a result, the Gigafactory will add 550 new jobs.

Currently, Tesla’s Fremont factory is 5.3-million square feet and Tesla aims to eventually produce 500,000 units a year there. But the Fremont location is landlocked, while the Nevada Gigafactory has plenty of space to expand being located on 3,200 acres or so.

Right now, there are about 1,000 employees at the Gigafactory and another 2,000 construction workers. The automaker expects to create 6,500 jobs once the Gigafactory is fully operational and CEO Elon Musk hopes one day it will have 10,000 employees. About 30 percent of the factory is currently complete.

Pleased to announce that @TeslaMotors will expand its investment in #NV by producing electric motors & gearboxes at #Gigafactory #nvsots
