Tesla‘s new 2170 battery cell is going to be the “the best cell in the world that is also the cheapest” when it comes to energy density, according to CEO Elon Musk.

Tesla’s new battery cells are expected to go into production by the end of this year, and according to Tesla, they’ll be the best batteries ever in terms of energy density. The new 2170 batteries are expected to be used in the Model 3 when it rolls out sometime next year. The new battery is being produced in partnership with Panasonic.

“Everything is going very well at the battery Gigafactory… We have the best cell in the world that is also the cheapest cell,” Musk told Electrek. The battery cell Musk is referring to could possibly be on the market within the next few months.

Historically, car battery cells are either very energy dense, which are expensive to manufacture, or they are cheap, but not both. However, Musk is claiming that the new 2170 battery is going to have energy density at an affordable price.

Current Tesla models use the 18650 model battery, which have an estimated energy density of about 250 watt-hour per kilogram. The exact specs on the new battery are still unknown, so time will tell whether the battery lives up to Musk’s promises.
