GMC has announced details on its 2017 Canyon, which will use a revamped 3.6-liter V6 hooked to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Along with the powertrain changes, a new All Terrain X model will be available for heading off road, bringing along Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac P255/65R17 all-terrain tires, all-weather floor mats, off-road suspension upgrades, a transfer case shield, hill descent control, 3-inch round step bars, spray-on bedliner and remote start.

Thanks to revisions to the continuously variable valve timing and direct injection system, the 3.6-liter V6 now squeezes out 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, a marginal increase over the old engine. GMC says that thanks to the new transmission, low-end torque should be significantly improved.

Other new features for 2017 include an updated IntelliLink radio with a 7-inch diagonal color touchscreen, standard teen driver mode with Intellilink, available heated steering wheel and three new colors: Dark Slate Metallic, Mineral Metallic and Red Quartz Metallic.

Opting for the new 2017 Canyon Denali model brings along a heated steering wheel, 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, 20-inch ultra-bright machined aluminum wheels, tubular chrome assist steps, a spray-on bedliner, an upgraded Bose sound system and more.

The additional power and new transmission don’t change the maximum tow rating, which is still pegged at 7000 pounds for gas-powered models. Properly equipped Canyon diesel models can tow 7700 pounds.

The 2017 GMC Canyon will arrive in dealerships in late 2016.

the power, torque, and 8-speed auto should add up to more than 7,000lbs tow rating. Even the Nissan Mallfinder can be equipped to tow 6,000 lbs.
