McLaren Considering Four-Seat Sports Car

McLaren could break away from its current mold and build a sports car with four seats to fight the Porsche Panamera and the Ferrari GTC4Lusso.

Speaking with McLaren’s Global Corporate Communications Manager, Duncan Forrester, Motoring posed the question of whether a four seat sports car would ever arrive from the British brand. “I think we’ll play with it, but I don’t think there’s much of an appetite for a family McLaren,” said Forrester.

So while it doesn’t sound likely, McLaren is at least toying with the idea of adding more seats to its mid-engine machines. And it’s possible that the brand will only be adding one more seat, bringing the total to three.

“If you said to a designer ‘go fill your boots’ of course [they’d love to create a 2+2 sports car]. But the thing is, if you were to look at three seats, as an example, the immediate point of reference for that is the F1 production car,” he said. “That car is iconic. So you’d have to look and think: how could you do that again? Do you want to do that?”

While adding more seat to a McLaren sports car is certainly on the table, there is no chance according to Forrester that the brand will be jumping in to the world of SUVs. “We are not going to build an SUV. I can tell you that straight out,” he said.

The brand recently released the 570GT, a car that is said to focus more on practicality thanks to a softer driving setup and a trunk hatch in the back that gives access to a larger storage area. This at least shows that the company is interested in building some practicality into its cars.
