The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD features an all-new, patented air intake system. Marked by a dramatic hood scoop, the system drives cool, dry air into the engine for sustained performance and cooler air temperatures during difficult driving conditions.

General Motors is adding a new patented air intake system to its heavy duty (HD) trucks.

Starting in the 2017 model year, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra HD will both get a new cold-air intake system that will help with engine cooling for sustained performance. A new hood scoop has been added to the trucks which will gather 60 percent of the air needed by the big diesel engine.

Not only is the air cooler when drawn through the hood scoop, a ram air effect helps to pull more air into the engine, allowing it to perform better.

GM did not mention any specific upgrades, but tow capacity and engine output should both be improved thanks to the new system.

To make sure the hood scoop doesn’t bring water into the engine, a new air/water separator has been designed for the system. Gm took the trucks to the Eisenhower Tunnel, which sits 11,000 feet above sea level, to put the new air intake system through its paces.
