Fiat 124 Spider Leaks Early Ahead of Official Debut

The Fiat 124 Spider has made an early, grainy appearance on the Internet ahead of its official debut at the 2015 L.A. Auto Show.

Based on the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the Fiat 124 Spider’s overall profile is similar to its Japanese counterpart and doesn’t carry any major styling cues that currently exist on other Fiat models. The rear end, however, does resemble what you’d expect to find on a Maserati, which makes sense since the luxury marque falls under the same Fiat Chrysler Automobiles ownership.

Those who might be disappointed with the Fiat 124 Spider’s styling will have to wait for the Abarth version that is believed to look substantially different. Rather than outfitting it with just more performance and aggressive styling, Abarth will reportedly use different sheet metal on the high-performance variant.

What lurks under the hood has not been confirmed, but Fiat will likely turn to its 1.4-liter Multiair turbo engine with around 135 horsepower. The powerplant produces 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque in the Fiat 500 Abarth, so it’s entirely possible that Abarth will retain the same engine for its 124 Spider model.

Luckily, we only have to wait another day for Fiat to officially debut the 124 Spider in Los Angeles where it will share all the details on its new sports car.

What about the 1.7t in the 4C? 237hp, would be awesome.

It could be that is this on the new MX5 chassis that Alfa are also developing a cabrio for, in which case I expect the Alfa model to sport the 1750, which would indeed be awesome. I have the 160BHP abarth (there is a 180 variant as well, btw) It's a great engine but agree that the 1750 would be betterer
