The Chevrolet Colorado diesel is officially America’s most fuel efficient pickup truck.

Along with the GMC Canyon diesel, both pickup trucks in two-wheel drive form return an estimated 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway for a 25 mpg combined rating. The four-wheel drive model gets 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway for a 23 mpg combined rating. With a 21-gallon fuel tank, the two-wheel drive pickups offer an estimated maximum highway range of 651 miles per tank.

In light of the recent Volkswagen diesel scandal, GM was quick to confirm that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) expressed no issues or concerns following its recent extensive testing and evaluation of the emission control system on the diesel pickups.

The 2.8-liter Duramax turbo diesel engine generates 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque and is paired to a Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic transmission.

“The Colorado Duramax diesel is in a league of its own,” said Sandor Piszar, director of Chevrolet Truck Marketing. “Colorado’s gas models already led the segment in fuel efficiency, and the new diesel – which no other non-GM competitor offers on a midsize truck – gives customers even greater freedom to go where they want with fewer fill-ups.”

We have had them in Australia for a year or so longer, and they are extremely economical, particularly on the highway. Diesels love a long run, rather than short infrequent trips. Not only is the Duramax diesel engine a high performer, it is also nice for the mechanic to work on. The injectors are much more accessible than on other engines, and it is the only modern common rail diesel engine in pick-ups that has a rebuild kit available - sleeves, pistons bearings etc. With a million kilometre service life, this is the one for me.

6-speed auto.. might get even better with a dual dry clutch auto? That is impressive. Better than a 2016 V8 Camaro. Though, diesel contains around 15-20% more energy per volume than gas
