Bentley Designer Calls Out Lincoln for Copycat Continental Concept

Bentley’s chief designer took to Facebook to share his feelings on the new Lincoln Continental Concept.

“I would have called it Flying Spur concept and kept the four round lights,” Bentley’s head designer Luc Donckerwolke posted about the Continental. He then posted directly on the Facebook page of Lincoln’s chief designer David Woodhouse, saying “do you want us to send the product tooling?” That comment was deleted shortly after it was posted.

Ford has a bit of a history with appropriating designs. With the new Fusion, many accused Ford of stealing styling elements from Aston Martin, while the last-generation Fusion is said to have borrowed styling from the VW Passat.

Road & Track asked Donckerwolke to elaborate on the situation. “This is not respectable. Such a copy is giving a bad name to the car-design world,” he said. Bentley’s exterior designer, Sangyup Lee, said the Continental is “a joke, seriously. It is very disappointing, especially for an exclusive brand like Lincoln.”

For now this is just a concept car, so many of the style cues may be changed before the Continental hits the market in 2016.

S**t just got real! There are similarities to be certain, but nobody will cross shop a Lincoln and a Bentley, it's like comparing fish sticks to caviar.

Ford is shameless about this. I mean, when the Grenada was introduced they had the audacity to admit they stole from Mercedes design. And we remember the devastating impact it had on the German motor industry. Fie on you Lincoln! Shame!
