GM Recalls 83,000 Trucks, SUVs for Ignition Switches
General Motors is still in the throes of dealing with faulty ignition switches moving into 2015.
The company announced that it will recall 83,572 trucks and SUVs from the 2011 and 2012 model years, including the Chevrolet Silverado HD, Suburban, Tahoe and Avalanche along with the GMC Sierra HD, Yukon, Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade including the EXT AND ESV versions. GM said the affected models may have been built with ignition switches that “may bind, making turning the key difficult or causing the ignition to get stuck in the ‘start’ position,” the company told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Models from the 2007 to 2014 model years that were repaired with new switches are also included in the recall because GM says the replacement switches may also be defective, although the company said fewer than 500 of the vehicles being recalled will actually have the defect.
“If stuck in the ‘start’ position, the ignition may suddenly snap back into the ‘accessory’ position, causing a loss of engine, steering, and braking power, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. If the vehicle is in a crash, the air bags may not deploy, increasing the risk of occupant injury,” GM said in a statement.
