Ignition Issue Spurs GM to Replace Keys

GM is running into trouble with its ignition keys again.

The American automaker is replacing ignition keys on its 2014 and 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL models for a design issue that can cause the shift lever to bump the key and shut off the engine. GM says the defect is not a safety risk because it only occurs when the driver’s foot is on the brake and is shifting gears, so a safety recall is not being conducted. Instead, GM is issuing a technical service bulletin and is requesting that dealers replace the keys if customers complain about the issue.

GM has reiterated that the issue doesn’t affect a moving vehicle and a change to the design of the key was actually done in February. Dealerships are asked to reissue a redesigned key if the customer purchased the truck prior to February and has run into the problem.

“Some customers may comment that if the tilt steering column is in the full-up position and the shift lever is moved between gears, the shift lever contacts the head of the ignition key,” GM said in the bulletin. “Some contact force may rotate the ignition key and shut the engine off. When this condition occurs, the brake pedal was applied.”

This is exactly why you DON'T buy the first year of a new model. 2013 Silverado Recalls = 2 2014 Silverado Recalls = 11 (so far)
