McLaren, Honda Exploring Road Car Collaboration
Earlier this year, Honda and McLaren announced a collaboration for Formula 1 in 2015, and it appears that both automakers are exploring the idea of working together on a production road car.
Honda, which will be supplying engines to McLaren Racing in 2015, has enjoyed a positive relationship with McLaren in the past from 1988 to 1992, where the collaboration ended with four drivers’ championships and four constructors’ crowns. The new deal is being described as a “multi-year” deal and though the contract is a “pure Formula 1 contract,” according to McLaren F1 head Martin Whitmarsh, the two automakers are not shy about sharing automotive technology with one another.

Currently, McLaren’s road car strategy doesn’t have an automotive partner, and the British automaker sees Honda as a natural fit. Unfortunately, if they were to collaborate together on a road car, it would be several years before we see anything. McLaren is hard at work on its third model, the P13, which Honda has had no input in.
Whitmarsh confirmed that though nothing is on paper and definite, both automakers are open to the idea of collaborating on sharing technology for their road car programs.
