Expected to make its debut at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, the Maserati Ghibli has been spied testing out on the streets this time around, still sporting some heavy camouflage.

Essentially a baby Quattroporte, the Ghibli will ride on a smaller wheelbase and is part of the Italian automaker’s plan to compete with the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class models.

Powerplants for the Ghibli include a 3.5-liter turbocharged Pentastar V6 engine as well as the larger V8 borrowed from the Quattroporte. The Ghibli will be built on the same chassis as the Chrysler 300 which also underpins the larger Quattroporte.
