Subaru Outback and Legacy models are being recalled to address a possible steering issue.

About 48,500 units are affected by the recall, which includes the 2015-2017 Outback and 2016-2017 Legacy. According to the Japanese automaker, the steering column in the affected vehicles may have been improperly built and turning the steering wheel may have no effect on the direction of the wheels. Subaru is warning owners to not drive their vehicles until they are inspected or repaired.

An investigation was launched early this month after a Subaru Outback owner reported an issue with the steering and the company moved quickly, deciding a week later that a recall was necessary. The cause of the defect is the result of an incorrect setting on a tool that makes the steering part that allows the steering wheel to rotate freely. As a result, the driver can lose the ability to steer the vehicle.

Subaru is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue and believes only 22,000 of the recalled vehicles have been sold. The remaining are either at dealerships or are in transit.
