Compared to the Honda HR-V, which is rated at 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway when equipped with a CVT and front-wheel drive, the 2016 Mazda CX-3 fuel economy ratings prove it is just slightly more economical in the city, by one mpg. The all-wheel drive HR-V matches the all-wheel drive CX-3 when it comes to fuel economy.

I don't know how to feel about those numbers. Assuming they were gathered under the new fuel economy test guidelines, should we have expected better? Could we have expected better? All things considered, I think they're on par, but its becoming clear that we're in need of more affordable hybrid powertrains for every class of vehicle if we're to do better. It seems car manufacturers are pretty much at the pinnacle of development with gasoline engines.
