After putting the new crop of 2014 half-tons to the test, AutoGuide.com has chosen the Ram 1500 as our 2014 Truck of the Year.

Helping to place this truck above the rest, the Ram offers industry exclusive features such as four-corner air suspension, an eight-speed transmission and a 3.0-liter diesel engine.

“A diesel half-ton has been on the forefront of truck enthusiast’s wish lists for years now,” said AutoGuide truck expert Stephen Elmer, “and Ram has put together a great package with few flaws.”

In general the Ram 1500 lineup is built to get work done and look good doing it. Innovative and advanced, it’s economical with the gasoline V6, a real work-horse with the Hemi and it’s just perfect with the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine.

“After increasing fuel economy and utility by adding an active air suspension and 8-speed transmission last year, for 2014 the diesel engine is the icing on the cake,” said Editorial Director Colum Wood. “Ram’s new EcoDiesel engine doesn’t just deliver V8 levels of torque, it does so with incredible fuel efficiency, and not just when cruising down the highway, but when tasked to do real work.”

The 3.0-liter diesel-equipped truck blew away the competition when it came to fuel economy, beating out every other truck by at least 2 MPG.

This test was no beauty competition either. Each truck was driven empty, with a 6,000 pound trailer and with 1,000 pounds worth of payload in the bed. Tie downs and trailer hook ups were also taken into account.
